The HID Edge
The HID bulb produces 2,800 and 3,500 lumens from wattage of 35 and 38 electrical powers, as opposed to your halogen headlamp that only gives an output of 700 to 2,100 lumens from 40 and 72 watts. This has to be powered by a voltage of 12.8.
Your HID lamp can also emit a given beam light. You can adjust the beam light smaller than your halogen beam lights. The Xenon headlamp will be able to give a robust beam if you want to retain a larger beam pattern.
You have heard a lot of talk about the Xenon bulb, and wondered all about it. The Xenon bulb is the smartest kid on the block. A Xenon HID bulb uses, Xenon gas, obviously. This gas gets the light going during start up. The light output picks up further when the car has fully warmed up. If your car head lamp uses argon, it would take longer for the light to reach their full brightness.
Performance wise, the Xenon and your choice of HID bulb can reflect road signs and markings better. The full beam light allows you to see further down the road than the regular halogen lamps.
What do you need an igniter and ballasts for?
Since HID bulbs cannot be powered by low voltage DC, you will need ballast with an external or internal igniter. When you switch on the headlamp, the igniter goes to work immediately by driving the several thousand volts to start the arc that occurs between the electrodes inside the bulb. The arc causes heat to vaporize the metallic salts that are in the arc chamber. Meanwhile, the ballast will slowly transform the operation to the arc operation.
You will find this operation in the D1 or D2 HID bulb and mercury-free D3 and D4 HID bulbs. If you are an environmentalist, get the mercury-free HID bulb versions. You’ll never go wrong.
